“The Bible talks about your gift making room for you, and we considered this as one of the many gifts that God has given us, so we started putting our hands to it.”

THE MINISTRY BEGINS

The Calm Before The Storm

During our first year of marriage from 2003 to 2004, we discussed what we felt the name of our music ministry should be. I was the artist, and he handled the CD/DVD duplications, label printing, videography, and management. When I sang at an event he handled my tracks and sound. While we were still engaged, we came up with New Beginning Music, Inc., because we felt that God was giving both of us a new beginning. Once we were married we filed for our fictitious name and EIN number. Then we began working our ministry.

Alonzo was also an electrician by trade, so we established his self-employed electrical business, Simmons Electrical Contracting, Inc., at the same time, and business was booming! Tithes were and always will be paid first, all the bills were paid before their due dates, and we took at least three or four vacations a year whenever we wanted. Life was great and was about to get even better. Financially, we were always great, but physically not so much. Alonzo was also my manager, and we butted heads frequently because he was business minded, and I was ministry minded. He wanted me to do certain things a certain way, and I didn’t want to, so on top of us trying to adjust to married life, we also had to deal with adjusting to one another professionally.

The first three years were so hard, and there were many times I just wanted to say “Bye!” There were many times I thought, I like my peace of mind, and if that meant being single then so be it. But God said, “No” and so did Alonzo most of the time. We continued going to church and counseling when we needed to, and we always promised to be open and honest about what we were feeling so God could heal our relationship quickly so we didn’t let our problems fester throughout the years and end up getting a divorce twenty years later.

I prayed often from The Power of a Praying Wife, which my mom gave me for my marriage, and I know and believe it helped me change my attitude toward my husband. When you stop praying for God to change the other person and pray that he changes you instead, he will do it, and you will notice a great change in your marriage. Just imagine if the whole world thought and prayed like that. Wow! What a wonderful world, full of love it would be. Through it all, the love was always present. Even when we were upset with each other, we never stopped loving each other and God.
